"Draw In" in Belfast

Here are a bunch of photos from Julie Douglas' wonderful symposium "Draw In" at Belfast College of Art last weekend.

I really enjoyed my one hour portrait painting demo with Julie's son Rory as my model. Next day I gave three portrait drawing workshops with Des modelling for me.

It was great to meet so many really terrific artists including Colleen Barry, Paul Foxton, Peter Cooper, Matt Weigle, Shevaun Doherty, and of course all the lovely attendees.

We had an exceptionally good workshop at Kennedy's on Saturday.
I really feel that everyone who attended excelled themselves.

Tony was our model.
He's a great guy and has been a favourite model of mine over several years.  But this was the first time I had asked Tony to model for a portraiture class.

I had  been concerned that some of the artists might struggle with the challenges of rendering dark skin. It wouldn't be true to say that they found it easy but they all worked very hard throughout the day and everyone achieved strikingly good results.

My Art Classes in Dublin

In a few weeks I will be starting teaching some classes for my friend Germaine at Swan Art in Dublin.

I will be teaching a two hour class on Tuesday evenings and participants sign up for six weeks at a time.

We get artists with a wide range of abilities so I like to keep the programme of classes fairly flexible in order to respond to their needs and interests, but my six week programme generally starts with still life drawing and painting in oils, at some stage we will be touching on landscape and portraiture work and I like to end on the sixth week drawing the live nude model.

We always have a nice atmosphere at the classes I have done at Swan Art and you can see some of the great results my students have achieved in these photos.
