"Comics, Covers and Children's"

Below is a painting I did quite some time ago for "Catkin" by Antonia Barber.
It is currently on show in the Central Library at the Ilac Centre in Dublin, as part of a collection of work from Illustrators Ireland members.
The show, curated by IGI member Margaret Anne Suggs, is called "ComicsCovers and Children's" and features work from ... Comics, book Covers and Children's Picture books.
So there is a huge and lovely variety of styles to see.
After the Central Library, the exhibition travels to a number of other libraries around the city, see the poster for details.

Life Drawings at the United Arts Club

I am delighted to have a few life drawings in Brian's latest group show at the United Arts Club opening later tonight the 7th May.
I used charcoal in the top pic and wax crayon and chalk on the lower...both were drawn on Ingres paper.

Upon the Wild Waves

I was delighted that Dr Pádraic Whyte, and Dr. Lydia Ferguson of Trinity College Dublin, chose my image from "The Names Upon The Harp" for the poster of their major exhibition in the beautiful Long Room in Trinity.
"Upon the Wild Waves: a Journey through Myth in Children’s Books" will be on display in the Long Room, Trinity College Library from 23 October 2014 until April 2015. The exhibition aims to serve as a celebration of the wealth of children’s literature held in the Library. Drawing upon material published over several centuries, the exhibition will explore some of the varying ways in which writers and illustrators have used myth to engage younger readers, from creation myths of Polynesia and tales of Greek Gods to Biblical myths and Celtic legends.

The Incredible Belly Boy

Thanks to Brian Gallagher for organising another great IGI exhibition, "Mythical Beasts", at the United Arts Club.
It was great to see everyone there, as well as the very impressive artwork.
This is "The Incredible Belly Boy", my second piece in the show.

A Charcoal Cartoon for Pictiúr

I had a lot of fun doing this sketch for a forthcoming exhibition, Pictiúr at IMMA - Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.
It was so nice to draw something funny for a change and to work so big. The original is about a metre across.
The show is curated by my friend Niamh, Laureate na nÓg, and is organized by CBI with help from the IGI.
The sketch was drawn to be one wall of a reading pod.

Kids will be able to sit inside with their books. How cool!

Here is my piece from the latest IGI (Illustrators Guild of Ireland) exhibition, "The Art of Superstition", which opens this Friday at The Copper House in Dublin.
My picture illustrates a scene from "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Pictiúr goes to Europe

Here's a nice little film about Pictiúr, the exhibition of Irish Children's Book Illustrators curated by my good pal Niamh Sharkey, Laureate na nÓg.
If you look hard you might just see a couple of my pictures from The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey in there somewhere.
The exhibition toured Europe and is now back in Ireland travelling to venues around the country including IMMA over the Christmas period.
The show is running now at Draíocht, Blancharstown and continues there until October 5th.

The Illustrated Beatles

The Illustrated Beatles is an exhibition by Illustrators Ireland:
43 classic Beatles songs visualised by 43 leading illustrators.

Alas I was too busy to get involved with this one, but I went along to the Grand Social on Tuesday for the opening.
That's me signing Tom Donegan's t-shirt.
The opening night was a blast and the artwork is fabulous. You can have a look and even buy a print or two at The Copper House Gallery's page.
Congratulations to everyone involved and particulaly to Peter Donnelly who put a huge amount of work into organising the show.

"Tales of Seduction," by Una Gildea

My friend Una Gildea had a great launch of her latest exhibition, "Tales of Seduction," last Thursday at the Copper House Gallery in Dublin.

Sean Hillen made an excellent opening speech and there was a very appropriate musical number from the Nualas to add to the fun.
Una's collages are brilliant. Do go and see them if you are in the area.
The show runs till the 20th of October.

PJ Portrait Study by Ronan Goti

While I was painting away yesterday in the life room, my friend Ronan Goti was doing this brilliant study of me.
I was really impressed because I wasn't staying still for him at all.
Ronan has a show opening in Malahide library on Saturday 19th May from 2pm to 5pm.
So do pop in if you are in the area.
