A Great Portraiture Workshop

There was a great atmosphere at my workshop on Saturday.

Our model, Michael, has a very characterful face and very striking colouring. 

He brought out the best in all of the artists there on the day.

My next portrait workshop at Kennedy Art will be on the 4th of July, but I am doing one at the lovely Corn Loft Centre in Wexford before that on 20th June.
I look forward to painting with some of you soon.

Another Great Workshop

We had another lovely workshop painting the portrait sketch at Kennedy Art on Saturday. Brian was a great model, and everyone worked hard, had fun and got great results.

The Portrait Sketch from Life...My Palette

There is one tomorrow, July 5th, at Kennedy Art in Dublin, and I am very much looking forward to it.

Painting Ciaran at Kennedy Art

 Ciaran is another artist who has a studio at La Catedral studios, and seeing him around the place I always thought he would make a great model for one of my portrait workshops.
These are some photos from Saturday's event where we had a very talented and enthusiastic group of artists.
Eva and Kevin are both experienced artists, and they had travelled all the way from Cork for the day, so I was delighted that they got so much out of it.
I didn't make a great sketch on the day myself but at Cavan's two-day event this weekend I hope to do better.

Emma Modelling at Kennedy's

 I really enjoyed Saturday's portrait sketch workshop at Kennedy Art. Emma was our model. It was great to meet her again after a gap of a few years when she was off travelling the world.

As usual my workshop starts with me doing a twenty minute demo showing how I do a rough outline sketch in dilute Raw Umber. Then I set the students off to do their own paintings and I make my way around each of them for one-to-one tuition throughout the day.
On Saturday I was able to spend another twenty minutes after lunch on my demo piece above.

Sophie: A Portrait Sketch

Here is the portrait sketch of Sophie that I did at KennedyArt a few weeks ago.

I added a bit of tone afterwards hoping to lose a lot of those edges along Sophie's cheek(the right one as we look at it).

Her colour is always a challenge to capture but my students all did a great job on the day.

I am very much looking forward to future workshops at KennedyArt.

The next two are on the 25th of January and the 15th February.

A Portrait of Lynda

I'm looking forward to giving two portrait sketch workshops in the next few weeks at Kennedy Art.

Meanwhile here is a portrait of Lynda who recently travelled up from Enniskillen to be painted by me.
Lynda is a lovely person and has just gone back to Art College herself, so we had lots of great chats about painting and drawing techniques.
She is also a terrific model to paint.
