A Wonderful Weekend in Cavan

Many thanks to Anne Brady for arranging a wonderful weekend workshop in Cavan.

We had a super bunch of very dedicated artists and I am delighted that everyone achieved very impressive results in their portraits.

It was a great pleasure to meet old and new friends in the lovely setting of the Cavan Crystal Hotel.

It was lovely to see my dear friend Josephine Brady, Cavan County Librarian, and her daughter Kate. 

Kate modelled for a character in one of my Gulliver paintings and Josephine was kind enough open the Johnston Central Library for me and my students to get to see the murals.

Our lovely model Jennifer was as still as a statue for the whole long weekend of posing. 

We all enjoyed ourselves so much that Anne will be arranging another weekend workshop for the Autumn.

Painting "Gulliver in Brobdingnag"

I am delighted to be heading to Cavan for a portraiture workshop this weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing some old friends and a couple of my paintings illustrating Gulliver's Travels that hang in the Johnston Central Library there.

The picture at top shows "Gulliver in Lilliput" and this video shows how I created Gulliver in Brobdingnag.
The lovely soundtrack is by Neil Martin and the West Ocean String Quartet.

Caomhnú Literary Festival

I had a great time in Cavan at the Festival on Saturday and Sunday.
I was delighted to meet Celine Kiernan who took this shot of me with one of my Gulliver paintings in the county Library.
Celine has done tremendously well with "The Poison Throne" the first of her Moorehawke Trilogy. Her mother and father were also there, and it's hard to imagine two sweeter people.
Joseph O'Connor, author of The Star of the Sea and Redemption Falls gave a very interesting and humorous reading, and Professor Terence Dolan was wonderfully entertaining on Hiberno-English.
Meeting Terry was a real inspiration. He's a great character, and a shows tremendous spirit in the way that he is getting over the stroke he had last February.
Best of all was seeing my old pal Josephine Brady, who commissioned the Gulliver Murals.
Many thanks to Kathleen and Catriona, who brought me back to Cavan. I was so sorry to hear that snow stopped some of the events on Sunday.

Upcoming Literature Festivals

I will be doing a couple of literature festivals in the next few months.
The first is the Caomhnú Literary Festival in Cavan. I always love getting down to Cavan, the people there are great and I get to see my big Gulliver paintings in the new library there. I'm doing a couple of workshops at schools on Friday the 6th of February, and I'll be hovering around the festival that day and next morning.
At the West Cork Literary Festival in early July, I'll be doing a talk with slides, and I think there will be another "In Conversation" event too. There might be an exhibition of original paintings too.
I'll post more details closer to the time.
