Life Room Studies.....With Added Drama
I am looking forward to doing a few teaching workshops in November.
This one is at the RHA in Dublin, and I am hoping it will be enjoyable for those of us who are sometimes frustrated by the boring poses and stale lighting arrangements that we often encounter at life drawing sessions. I will be playing about with shadow and costume and I will be choosing models who enjoy hamming it up a bit in their poses. Click on this link if you want to join us. Here's the blurb:"As an illustrator P.J. Lynch makes pictures with a strong narrative core. This interest will be reflected in his three day life room workshop.Working with male and female models posed nude, partially draped and clothed, the emphasis will be on more dramatic poses and varied lighting arrangements. Beginning with shorter studies the poses will increase in length through the course of the workshop. Various drawing media will be used and painting will be in oils or acrylic. This workshop will appeal to those with experience in life drawing and an interest in illustrative, narrative picture-making."Please note that although the workshop is on the 14th to the 16th of November, you have to apply for a place by Friday the 7th of October.Wednesday, September 19, 2012

"The Christmas Revels; An Irish Celebration of the Winter Solstice"
I often find myself working on Christmas projects in the middle of summer.
This was a nice poster project I did for the Revels company in Boston for
"The Christmas Revels; An Irish Celebration of the Winter Solstice" their Christmas Production this year. It's set on the Carpathia amongst the Irish travelling to America. The review is pretty light hearted and full of songs and jokes, so it was nice for me to revisit the subject of emmigration that I tackled in a more serious way in When Jessie Came Across the Sea.

"Love Lucie x" Launch
We had a brilliant time at Marita's launch of Love Lucie x last night.
It was great to see a lot of old bookish friends and also to meet some new ones,
and it was a pleasure to hang out with Marita and James and the rest of her lovely family after the launch.
Thanks to Mandy for this shot of Marita and me.

"Love Lucie X" by Marita Conlon-McKenna
An old friend and one of my favourite authors, Marita Conlon-McKenna has a new book coming out.
"Love Lucie X" is a very touching and poignant study of one little girl's response to a tragic loss in her life.
It's almost unbearably sad in parts but Marita very subtly advances Lucie's predicament from the deepest grief towards hope and healing in the end.
In an uncharacteristic lapse of judgement Marita has asked me to launch "Love Lucie X" this evening at Dubray Books in Grafton Street, Dublin.
If you are in the area pop in and get a book signed by Marita.
I can guarantee you a really good read and probably a good cry.

The Drawing Studio
I had a great evening's drawing at Sam Horler's life session at the Drawing Studio, Clarendon Street, Dublin.
He begins with two minute studies, and quickly progresses to longer poses.
I did this drawing during the final hour long pose.
Sarah , the model, was excellent, but the best thing about Sam's life room is the really great lighting arrangement he has set up.
He also supplies materials and tea and coffee during the break. How cool is that?
I think the drawing sessions are on on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays. Check Sam's website for details.
